From the analysis of maintenance records and on-site situations, the main reasons for this phenomenon are as follows:

  1. The safety valve does not vent smoothly to the outside. The safety valve has the function of adjusting the air pressure inside the battery and should be able to release the internal gas in time under normal circumstances. In the initial use of the storage gel battery, since the electrolyte inside the battery is relatively "rich", the amount of gas released during the charging process is large. If there is a problem with the safety valve and the exhaust is not smooth when the amount of gas released during the charging process of the battery is large to a certain extent, the shell will swell due to "flatulence", and even the safety valve port may crack.

  2. The battery management program chip parameter design of the switching power supply system is inconsistent with the use characteristics of the storage gel battery. When the equalizing current of the battery drops to the conversion condition of 10mA/Ah, the equalizing charge fails to switch to the floating charge program, and freewheeling equalization is required (the current of equalizing during the freewheeling phase in a high-temperature environment may still be rebound rises, and the freewheeling equalization time is generally 4 to 10 hours). In addition, the outdoor base station has poor power supply conditions and frequent power failures, which will inevitably cause the switching power supply to overcharge the battery every time it is charged, which also accelerates the corrosion rate of the battery electrodes and the loss of water in the battery. The extremely high temperature inside the battery leads to storage gel battery occurrence bulging.

  3. The temperature sensor line of the storage gel battery is not connected, causing the system to fail to switch from equal charge to floating charge when the temperature reaches 40°C. In a high-temperature environment, the failure of the temperature compensation function actually increases the total float voltage of the battery pack, which directly causes the final charging current of the battery to not be reduced, but will increase the charging current by multiples and continue to affect the internal analysis of the battery. Gas and heat, thereby intensifying the electrolysis of the colloidal electrolyte water, causing the battery to swell.

  4. The storage gel battery has poor ventilation conditions. The design of the battery cabinet fully considers the anti-theft safety, resulting in poor ventilation and natural heat dissipation capacity of the battery pack, and the temperature generated by the battery pack during the charging process cannot be diffused in time, which also has a certain impact on the swelling of the battery shell.


The solution of the storage gel battery expansion

  1. In order to shorten the equalization time and avoid storage gel battery swelling caused by overcharge, reset the equalization and float charge conversion conditions, and change the original set current value of 10mA/Ah as the equalization conversion condition to when the current value drops to 20mA/Ah When the time, the system automatically switches to floating charge operation.

  2. Connect the temperature sensor of the switching power supply to the battery cabinet, so that the floating charge voltage of the switching power supply can be adjusted with the ambient temperature. Increase the over-temperature protection, when the temperature reaches 40 ℃, the system will automatically switch to floating charge operation, to avoid continuous high-current charging caused by battery swelling.

  3. In order to prevent the storage gel battery from overcharging and shorten the equalizing charge protection time, the equalizing charge protection time is changed from 18 hours to 10 hours.

  4. Extend the timing equalization cycle to avoid over-frequency high-current equalization. Change the original set value of 100 days for the timing equalization cycle to 180 days.

  5. Cancel the freewheeling equalization function of the switching power supply to avoid storage gel battery swelling caused by overcharging.
